Building a network of cooperating businesses.

Business Development Program

Primary Aim

The colonization of the galaxy by life from Earth.  This is a transcendent project that is expected to take the various species of humanity and posthumanity tens of millions of years.  To start out, lets run a project for the next 1000 years to get this process started.  This is The Millennial Project.

Strategic Objective

To construct a colony capable of self replication by the year 2045.

        • Opportunities
          • Ad Network - for online marketing of websites; (see banner ad designer)
          • Apartment Locator - good for relocating members to land or shore based colony development locations. (Note: members with successful e-businesses may be more easily relocatable)
          • Association Management - takes care of administrative duties for small non-profits
          • Banner Ad Designer - for online marketing of websites; (see ad network)
          • Bookstore - I see this more as an adjunct to the main LUF site. (see e-books)
          • Business Broker - to sell business opportunities to new buyers (see cybermall)
          • Business Plan Writing Service - If we are to start building a large number of businesses, having a company with this kind of expertise is a no-brainer: every one of these businesses will require businessplans for start-up and growth.
          • Community Events Web Site - could focus on space and technology events
          • Copy Writing - another marketing business
          • Coupon Site - more marketing
          • Custom-Printed Products - the LUF and member businesses/organizations could use these for marketing
          • Cybermall Owner/Operator - to sell business services to new customers (see business broker)
          • Desktop Imagery - more marketing
          • Direct Marketing/Direct Mail - more marketing
          • Do-It-Yourself Site - this would focus more on LUF and Maker related activities rather than home/garden improvement, but the idea is the same.  (see electronics store and hobby store)
          • E-Books - books on LUF topics can be written and sold as e-books. (see bookstore)
          • Educational Products - need I say more...
          • Electronics Store - parts and supplies or LUF and others in the DIY/Maker community (with Foundation member discount coupons, perhaps?); (see DIY site and hobby store)
          • Employment Agency - not all members will invest or start their own businesses.  However, as LUF businesses grow, they could use employees.
          • Event and Meeting Planning - who do we go to, to plan our events?
          • E-Zines (Online Magazines) - yes, let's try this again, but do it as a profitable business
          • Fund Raiser - more marketing; initial business start-up costs and funding of various Foundation non-profit organizations could use this.
          • Graphic Designer - we could use a few of these for websites, e-books, games, etc. (note, the book estimates start-up costs at $10,000 to 25,000)
          • Hobby Store - Maker hobbies, anyone? (see DIY site and electronics store)
          • Information Broker - collect information, organize it, package it, and sell it, ...
          • Interior Design - I include this with the specific aim of finding talent who can dress up our colony models and mock-up so that they don't look like the bridge of the Enterprise.
          • Market Research - more marketing: I get the feeling that marketing is a growth sector for small businesses or that is an area of interest for the author (hence her other book 101 Ways to Promote Your Website, etc.)
          • Newsletter Developer - need I say more...
          • Online Coach - for training members and others to be their best
          • Online Promotion Company - more marketing
          • Podcasts and Podcast Directory - need I say more...
          • Press Release Developer -  more marketing
          • Press Release Distribution Service -  more marketing
          • Printing Service - for when electronic media are not enough
          • Professional Organizer - Ok, this is just for me.  I need to get organized...
          • Public Relations Specialist -  more marketing
          • Real Estate Site - that's what we do, right? (note: may require a realtor's license)
          • Resume Writing Service - for personal marketing; also for members to relocate without starting abusiness; (see business plan writing service)
          • Search Engine Optimization Service -  more marketing
          • Search Engine Submission and Monitoring Service -  more marketing
          • Seminars Online - for training, public speaking, etc.
          • Small Business Resource Center - with all these businesses, who do they call on for help?
          • Software Download Site - LUF selected and developed software for members and other to download
          • Survey Service - more marketing
          • Training/Speaking - for getting the word out about the LUF and it's mission, and other topics like getting started in e-business
          • Translation Services - for multilingual members
          • T-Shirt Design - for more marketing and merchendising
          • Tutoring Services - educational services
          • Virtual Assistant - for an outsourced part-time employee role
          • Web Design - obvious, besides the new LUF site, everyone of these businesses would have their own site.
          • Web Master - This business could manage one or more of these sites from behind the scenes
          • Web Radio - need I say more?
          • Who's Who Directory - I didn't even know that this could be a business.  However, a Who's Who in Space Colonization would be interesting in and of itself.  Also, good for networking...

Systems Strategy

A business requires three types of systems to succeed:

1. Hard systems -- inanimate objects like computers, offices, work materials, etc.

2. Soft systems -- animate objects (People), ideas, scripts, procedures, etc.

3. Information systems -- which provide data about the interaction between soft- and hard-systems.
